- El European Southern Observatory (ESO) es un organismo europeo creado en 1962 para "establecer y operar un observatorio astronómico en el hemísferio sur, equipado con poderosos instrumentos, con el objetivo de estimular y organizar la colaboración astronómica"
Está financiado por once países: Bélgica, Dinamarca, Finlandia, Francia, Alemania, Italia, Países Bajos, Portugal, Suecia, Suiza y Reino Unido. Otros países han expresado su interés en formar parte. ESO opera en tres emplazamientos distintos en el Desierto de Atacama en Chile. Entre los medios observacionales con los que cuenta ESO destaca el VLT (Very Large Telescope), un conjunto de cuatro telescopios de 8.2 m. de diámetro. Entre los proyectos futuros de ESO se encuentra la realización de interferometría óptica con el VLT en un proyecto denominado VLTI y la construcción de una red de radiotelescopios de larga base en el desierto de Atacama denominado ALMA.
